It is important to use quality car wash and car wax products for your vehicle.  But, it’s just as important that you select the right products to remove the dirt and abrasives and apply the wax too.  Using low quality or dirty towels can be a major contributor to damaging your vehicle’s finish with fine scratches and swirl marks.  Continued use of incorrect or inferior cleaning products will have a cumulative effect and make the damage to your vehicle’s finish that much more apparent over time.

In the last few years a revolutionary new material, microfiber, has been introduced into the detailing market.  It has quickly gained a reputation as a soft, super absorbent, and durable material.  Microfiber is so versatile that it can be used to both scrub and polish without negatively affecting your vehicle’s finish.

Microfiber is a term that can be used to describe artificially manufactured fibers that are less than 1 denier, but good quality towels to be used for detailing should be in the .01 -.02 denier range. A denier is a measurement used in the textile industry to define a fiber’s thickness.  The lower the denier, the finer the fabric.  To provide some comparative examples, microfiber is 3x finer than terrycloth, and 100x finer than human hair.

There are currently four different materials that are used to create microfiber.  They are acrylic, nylon, polyester, and rayon.  Generally, the auto detailing industry uses a microfiber blend that is comprised of 80% polyester and 20% polyamide (a nylon based material).  This blend is quite effective because it creates a microfiber product that acts like a magnet for dust and lint, and also creates a “wicking” action that pulls liquid away from the surface and into the fiber, which is what makes it so absorbent.  It can absorb up to 8x its weight in liquids, which makes it about twice as absorbent as an equivalently sized cotton towel.

Microfiber towels can be purchased at most locations where automotive products are sold.  Wal-Mart, Costco, Target, and Advance Auto Parts are just a few examples of retailers that stock microfiber for automotive detailing use.  Not only can microfiber be purchased as a towel, but you will also find it available as wash mitts, wax applicators and dusters.  It can be found in a variety of sizes, colors, weights, blends, and weaves to suit your specific needs. Microfiber is so soft and gentle that it can be used on a wide variety of vehicle surfaces, including; plastic, vinyl, leather, glass, and of course, your vehicle’s exterior.
